BJP Membership Drive: On Monday, October 21, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a significant milestone. Under its membership drive, 100 million people have become members of the party. As part of this, senior leader Lal Krishna Advani has also taken active membership of the BJP. On Tuesday, October 22, he was given a certificate and honored with a traditional stole.

Currently, the party’s goal is to surpass its previous record of 110 million members. The BJP’s membership drive will continue until the end of October. Born on November 8, 1927, in Karachi (now in Pakistan), Advani joined the RSS as a volunteer in 1942. He served as BJP’s national president from 1986 to 1990, again from 1993 to 1998, and from 2004 to 2005.

Founded BJP with Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1980

Lal Krishna Advani, along with the late leader and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, founded the BJP in 1980. During his nearly three-decade parliamentary career, Advani first served as Home Minister and later as Deputy Prime Minister in Vajpayee’s cabinet from 1999 to 2004.

Bharat Ratna for Advani

On December 10, 2007, the BJP parliamentary board formally declared Advani as the prime ministerial candidate for the 2009 general elections. However, after Congress and its allies won the 2009 elections, Advani appointed Sushma Swaraj as the Leader of the Opposition in the 15th Lok Sabha. Recently, on March 30, 2024, he was honored with the Bharat Ratna by President Droupadi Murmu.
