Atishi to Become Delhi’s New Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal Proposed Her Name

Delhi’s next Chief Minister will be Atishi. During a meeting of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal proposed her name, and the MLAs agreed. Atishi will be Delhi’s third woman Chief Minister. Before her, Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit have served as Delhi’s Chief Ministers.

Earlier, AAP’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC) had suggested Atishi’s name for the position of Delhi’s next Chief Minister. The PAC meeting took place on Monday, 16th September.

Kejriwal Announced His Resignation on Sunday

On Sunday, 15th September, Arvind Kejriwal announced that he would resign from the Chief Minister’s post. He is expected to meet the Lieutenant Governor Vinay Saxena this evening to submit his resignation.

Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on 21st March in connection with the Delhi excise policy case, followed by his arrest by the CBI. On 13th September, the Supreme Court granted him bail in the CBI case. He was already granted bail in the ED case and was released from Tihar Jail on 13th September.

Why Did Kejriwal Make This Decision?

On Sunday, while addressing AAP workers, Kejriwal announced his decision to resign. He said he wanted to go through an “agni-pariksha” (test of fire). He stated, “I will not sit on the Chief Minister’s chair until people certify my honesty.” He also suggested holding elections along with Maharashtra in November.

Other Names Were Also Considered

According to news agency PTI, party insiders had earlier mentioned other names for the Chief Minister’s post, including Delhi ministers Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, and Saurabh Bharadwaj, alongside Atishi.
