During the Durga idol immersion procession in Maharajganj area of Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, there was an incident of stone-pelting, firing, and arson. A young man lost his life in the violence, with allegations that Ramgopal Mishra was beaten and then shot dead. Many others were injured in the clashes.
Opposition parties have criticized the Uttar Pradesh government over the incident. In response, BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar has accused the opposition of being responsible for the violence.
SP and Congress Responsible for the Incident
In an interview with ABP News, Rajeev Chandrasekhar said, “I can say with full responsibility that SP and Congress are behind the Bahraich incident. These parties do not want peace in the country. But our government is fully prepared to deal with this.”
Statement from Bahraich Police Superintendent
Earlier, Bahraich Police Superintendent Vrinda Shukla shared details about the incident, stating, “There was tension in the Maharajganj area of Mahsi Tehsil. When a procession passed through a Muslim-majority area, a person from another community was allegedly attacked, leading to his death. Following the incident, the police have detained around 30 people. Efforts are being made to restore peace in the affected areas.”

She added that sufficient police forces have been deployed in the area, and CCTV footage from the violence-hit regions is being reviewed to identify the culprits. Strict action will be taken against them. She also mentioned that a case has been registered against a person named Salman, whose shop was allegedly involved in the firing. Suspects have been taken into custody.
CM Yogi Adityanath Condemns the Violence
UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath condemned the violence and assured that the culprits will not be spared. He also instructed the administration to ensure smooth idol immersion and engage in dialogue with religious organizations.
