AAP Supports NC in Jammu & Kashmir, Mehraj Malik Becomes MLA from Doda

After the election results in Jammu & Kashmir, the National Conference (NC) is moving ahead to form the government. In a significant development, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has decided to support the NC. AAP has submitted its support letter to the Lieutenant Governor (LG).

This is the first time that AAP has won a seat in Jammu & Kashmir. Mehraj Malik from AAP has won the Doda seat and will be the only AAP MLA in the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly. With this, AAP now has a presence in five states.

Mehraj Malik Defeats BJP Candidate

Mehraj Malik, the AAP candidate from Doda, defeated BJP’s candidate Gajay Singh Rana. Malik won by a margin of 4,538 votes. He secured a total of 23,228 votes, while the BJP candidate got 18,690 votes. The National Conference candidate finished in third place.

After his victory on October 8, Mehraj Malik said, “I wanted to ensure justice for the people, but I wasn’t strong enough before. It took me 15 years to reach here. Now, I will work on people’s issues. I want people to share their problems with me so that I can address them.” AAP’s national leader Arvind Kejriwal also congratulated Malik on his victory.

Party-wise Seat Distribution in Jammu & Kashmir

The election for 90 assembly seats in Jammu & Kashmir was held in three phases. The National Conference and Congress contested the election together as a coalition. National Conference won 42 seats, Congress secured 6, CPM won 1, BJP got 29 seats, PDP won 3, AAP won 1 seat, and 7 independents were also successful.
