On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the Gandhi Ashram in the capital, Lucknow, and spun the Charkha (spinning wheel). During this event, the CM announced that there will be a 25% discount on Khadi products for 108 days at the Gandhi Ashram. He also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue located at the GPO and participated in a cleanliness drive by sweeping the area. The CM also honored former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
The CM said that Mahatma Gandhi was the great leader of India’s independence. The nation expresses its gratitude for his contributions to the country and humanity. On Gandhi’s birth anniversary, CM Yogi visited the Regional Gandhi Ashram in Lucknow, where he spun the Charkha and enjoyed listening to devotional songs. He also purchased Khadi clothes and made the payment online.

In his speech, the CM said that before the Swadeshi (local goods) movement became a key part of India’s freedom struggle, the fight for independence wasn’t as united. When Gandhi joined the movement and connected it with the idea of Swadeshi, it inspired every citizen with a sense of pride and self-reliance, and Khadi became a symbol of that.
Khadi Should Be a Part of Our Lives – CM
CM Yogi also mentioned that the Swachh Bharat Mission (Clean India Mission) is an extension of Mahatma Gandhi’s cleanliness campaign, which is still relevant today, just as it was 100 years ago. The mission, started by Prime Minister Modi ten years ago, has reached new heights. The construction of over 12 crore toilets in the country not only promotes cleanliness but also enhances the dignity of women.
The CM urged that Khadi should become a part of our daily lives. He announced a 25% discount on Khadi products for 108 days at Gandhi Ashrams. He encouraged people to buy at least one Khadi item during this period, gift Swadeshi products, and inspire others to use local goods. This will help create more jobs and contribute to the vision of a self-reliant India. He also appealed to prioritize local products during festivals instead of foreign goods.
CM Yogi paid tribute to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary at the Khadi Ashram. He stated that Shastri was a true follower of Gandhi and joined the freedom movement on Gandhi’s call. In 1964, Shastri had the opportunity to serve the nation as Prime Minister. The country’s progress towards self-reliance in food security can be seen even during Shastri’s short tenure. In 1965, when India faced war from an enemy country, India responded with strength and bravery. This showed that while the country works for the welfare of humanity, it will also give a strong response to any threat to its borders.
