The Indian government introduced GST (Goods and Services Tax) in 2017 to simplify the tax system and prevent tax evasion. However, fake GST bills and scams are still a problem. Here’s how you can identify fake GST invoices and protect yourself.
What is a GST Invoice?
A GST invoice is a bill you get when you buy goods or services. It shows the seller’s name, details of the product or service, purchase date, discount, and other information. It helps you understand what you bought, how much you paid, and the tax applied.

Why Fake GST Bills are a Problem
Some scammers are issuing fake GST bills. They might use VAT/TIN or Central Sales Tax numbers instead of GSTIN (GST Identification Number) and charge CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax) and SGST (State Goods and Services Tax).
How to Identify a Fake GST Bill
- Check the GST Number: A real GST bill has a 15-digit GSTIN. The first two digits are the state code, the next 10 digits are the supplier’s PAN number, the 13th digit is the PAN holder’s unit, and the 14th digit is ‘Z’. The last digit is a checksum digit.
- Verify GSTIN on the Official Website:
- Go to the official GST website: GST Portal
- Select the ‘Search Taxpayer’ option.
- Click on ‘Search by GSTIN’.
- Enter the GSTIN number in the search box. If the GSTIN is valid, you will see its details. If not, the number is likely fake.
Where to Report Fake GST Bills
If you receive a fake GST bill, you can file a complaint on the GST official portal. Alternatively, you can email your complaint to cbecmitra.heldesk@icegate.gov.in.
