Japan’s ruling party has chosen former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba as their leader. Next week, he will be sworn in as the country’s new Prime Minister. Shigeru is known for keeping model warships and fighter jets in his office. He has also proposed the idea of creating an “Asian NATO” to counter threats from China and North Korea.

Shigeru Ishiba often makes statements about the United States and has a different approach compared to former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Shigeru believes Japan should have a more independent role in foreign policy and defense.

According to a report from Reuters, Shigeru Ishiba’s appointment as Japan’s Prime Minister is confirmed. On Friday, Japan’s ruling party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), selected him to lead the country. The LDP has complete control of Japan’s lower house of parliament, which holds significant power. In Japan’s democratic system, the leader chosen by the party becomes the Prime Minister.

In the first and second rounds of voting, Shigeru Ishiba defeated Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi. Earlier, there were speculations that Japan might get its first female Prime Minister. Political Science Professor Yu Uchiyama from Tokyo University had predicted a tough competition between Shigeru Ishiba and Sanae Takaichi, but in the end, Shigeru emerged as the winner.
