Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency has faced legal challenges across various courts in India. On September 2, 2024, a petition was filed in the Madhya Pradesh High Court by the Jabalpur Sikh Sangat and Guru Singh Sabha Indore. During the hearing, Sikh lawyer Advocate Narendra Pal Singh Roopra, who represented the petitioners, became very emotional.
Emotional Plea Against the Film
Advocate Roopra, also a Sikh, argued that the film’s trailer depicts Sikhs in a very negative light. He mentioned that Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of Sikhs, praises Hindu gods and uses the name “Ram” 2,500 times. He highlighted that Hindus and Sikhs have always been united and there should be no division between them. However, he claimed that the film unfairly portrays Sikhs as cruel.

Allegations in the Petition
The petition accuses the film of violating the fundamental rights of Sikhs. Advocate Roopra asked the court to prevent the film from being certified, arguing that it threatens India’s sovereignty and integrity. He described scenes from the trailer where Sikhs are shown holding guns and committing violence, and claimed this misrepresents the Sikh community.
Impact on Sikh Children
Roopra expressed concern about the impact of the film on Sikh children. He said that Sikh kids wearing turbans are being teased as “Khalistanis” at school. He emphasized that being part of the Indian Army is a matter of pride for Sikhs, and noted the deep connection between Sikhism and Hinduism.
Court’s Response
Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, who is hearing the case, acknowledged that the film’s release might be delayed. He noted that the Central Board of Film Certification might be reviewing the film, and some scenes could be edited or removed. The film’s release, originally set for September 6, has been postponed due to ongoing protests across the country.
