Tamil Nadu CM Vijay’s Wife Sangeetha Withdraws Divorce Petition
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C. Joseph Vijay and his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam have decided not to proceed with their divorce case. On Friday, the Chengalpattu Family Court officially closed the matter after Sangeetha withdrew the petition she had filed earlier this year.
Sangeetha attended the hearing through video conferencing and informed the court that she wished to withdraw her divorce plea. After considering her submission, the court formally disposed of the case, bringing the legal proceedings to an end.
Divorce Petition Filed Earlier This Year
Sangeetha had approached the Chengalpattu Family Court in February 2026, seeking the dissolution of her marriage with Vijay. In her petition, she cited irreconcilable differences between the couple as the reason for seeking divorce.
She had also requested permanent alimony and permission to continue residing at the couple’s matrimonial home in Neelankarai, Chennai.
Several Hearings Before Final Withdrawal
The case had gone through multiple adjournments over the past few months.
During a hearing on June 15, Sangeetha had already informed the court through video conferencing that she intended to withdraw the petition. The matter was then postponed to August 7 for further proceedings.
In another hearing held last month, neither Vijay nor Sangeetha appeared before the court. Their legal representatives informed the judge that both parties were unable to attend personally, leading to another adjournment.
With Friday’s hearing, the court officially accepted the withdrawal request and closed the case.
Vijay and Sangeetha’s Marriage
Vijay and Sangeetha have shared a relationship spanning nearly three decades. The couple married on August 25, 1999, in Chennai through a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony.
They have two children:
- A son, born in 2000.
- A daughter, born in 2005.
Rumours Began in 2023
Speculation about trouble in the couple’s marriage first surfaced in 2023 when Sangeetha was absent from several major public events attended by Vijay. At the time, reports of marital issues were dismissed.
However, the rumours resurfaced in 2025 after she did not attend several important political programmes organised by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), including the party’s second state conference.
TVK’s Historic Electoral Victory
Meanwhile, Vijay’s political career has seen significant success. In the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the single-largest party, ending the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK.
The party later formed the state government with the support of the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML, leading to Tamil Nadu’s first coalition government in many years.
Conclusion
The withdrawal of the divorce petition officially ends months of legal proceedings involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay and his wife Sangeetha. While speculation had surrounded the couple’s relationship for several years, the family court’s decision to close the case marks the conclusion of the legal dispute for now.
