Sunny Deol recalls his family’s Partition stories
While discussing Batwara 1947, Sunny Deol revealed that the subject has a personal connection for him. His father Dharmendra was born in undivided India in 1935, while other members of his family also carried memories and stories of Partition.
Deol said that he grew up listening to stories about the period from his grandfather, uncle and aunt. Those accounts remained with him and shaped his understanding of the tragedy.
According to Deol, Partition was a heartbreaking chapter in history because countless innocent people lost their lives and were forced to leave their homes.
Dharmendra had seen the film before his death
Dharmendra was reportedly present when Rajkumar Santoshi first narrated the story of Batwara 1947 to Sunny Deol. Preity Zinta recalled that the veteran actor became emotional while hearing the story.
Sunny also revealed that his father watched a version of the film before his death in November 2025 and was pleased with it.
The film therefore carries an added emotional significance for the Deol family, particularly because of Dharmendra’s own connection to undivided India and the memories of Partition that he passed on to his family.
What is Batwara 1947 about?
Set against the backdrop of Partition, Batwara 1947 follows Sikandar Mirza, played by Sunny Deol. Mirza leaves his home in Lucknow and moves to Lahore with his family as violence spreads across the region.
After arriving in Lahore, Mirza discovers that an elderly Hindu woman is still living inside the mansion that has been allocated to his family. Instead of abandoning her, he decides to protect her from people attempting to harm her.
The film is based on Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamyai Nai. Santoshi has adapted the story for the big screen while giving the protagonist a more action-oriented character that suits Sunny Deol’s screen persona.
Rajkumar Santoshi on the film’s message
Rajkumar Santoshi said that Partition revealed both the best and worst sides of humanity. While people demonstrated extraordinary courage and made enormous sacrifices, the period was also marked by horrific violence.
According to Santoshi, Batwara 1947 attempts to portray both sides of that complicated history.
The director has described Sunny Deol’s character as one of the most courageous characters he has created. Rather than fighting a conventional enemy, Mirza stands against fanaticism and attempts to protect another human being despite the risks involved.
Santoshi has also stressed that he wanted the film to remain emotionally engaging and entertaining rather than turning it into a conventional lesson or political message.
Preity Zinta returns to the big screen
Batwara 1947 also marks Preity Zinta’s return to cinema after a considerable gap. She plays Mirza’s wife and is part of the family’s journey during Partition.
Zinta said she was interested in working on a period film because she had always been fascinated by the lifestyle, clothing and everyday life of earlier generations.
Her character’s life also reflects the limited choices available to many women during the late 1940s, with household responsibilities dominating their daily lives.
Zinta said that her priorities changed after starting a family and that motherhood became one of the most important milestones of her life. She is now open to returning to films, particularly when a project offers a subject that genuinely interests her.
Sunny Deol’s career resurgence continues
Batwara 1947 arrives during another strong phase in Sunny Deol’s career. Following the massive success of Gadar 2, the actor has taken on several high-profile projects.
