Record-Breaking Rainfall in Dubai: A Consequence of Human-Induced Climate Change?

Dubai, a city known for its soaring skyscrapers and opulent infrastructure, has recently been hit by torrential rainfall, causing disastrous floods. This event has left the world puzzled, as it is unusual for such heavy rainfall to occur in a desert city.

According to the UAE National Meteorology Centre, Dubai recorded a year and a half’s rain in just a few hours, with the city of Al Ain receiving 254 mm in less than 24 hours on Tuesday, the highest ever since records began. This rainfall was triggered by a high-intensity storm passing over the region, which originated in the Mediterranean Sea and moved eastwards. The storm was further fuelled by additional moisture from the Arabian Sea, giving extreme rainfall over Bahrain and Qatar.

While this event is unusual, it is not a one-off incident. Extreme weather events, especially short bursts of torrential rain, have intensified globally, leading to disastrous floods. This trend can be attributed to massive amounts of greenhouse emissions pumped into the atmosphere by human-led activities, raising global temperatures and making the world over 1.1°C warmer already.

According to experts, global warming has intensified heavy rainfall events. Though the overall number of rainy days is less, the amount of rainfall on those days has increased significantly. This is because a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, and sustain strong, deep clouds for a long duration, leading to a sudden downpour.

There has been a widespread debate over whether the existing rainfall event was exacerbated by artificial cloud seeding, a scientific method of modifying the weather by dispersing large salt particles into convective clouds through an aircraft to increase the overall precipitation. However, experts suggest that it is highly unlikely, as artificial seeding is usually not recommended if a storm is well-developed.

The intensity of rainfall in Dubai has been so high that it has overwhelmed the desert city, leaving its existing drainage system struggling to cope. The science is clear – human-induced climate change is set to make such extreme weather events more intense, frequent, and disastrous in the near future. Therefore, the emphasis should now be on doing a structural audit of the lifeline infrastructure and making it more resilient to face such events.

Fake identity documents, including Aadhaar cards and driving licenses with addresses from various states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, along with 35 SIM cards, assisted the Bengaluru cafe blast accused in evading investigators for over a month, according to sources familiar with the investigation.

On Friday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) apprehended Mussavir Hussain Shazib (30) and Adbul Matheen Taha (30), who were allegedly involved in the March 1 IED blast at Bengaluru’s Rameshwaram Cafe. The two were arrested in Digha, Purba Medinipur, approximately 180 kilometers from Kolkata, after spending around three weeks in West Bengal, frequently changing aliases and staying in low-budget, under-the-radar hotels.

Upon questioning, the men revealed that they had stayed in various locations in West Bengal, including Digha, Kolkata, Purulia, and Darjeeling. After being granted a three-day transit remand, the NIA plans to take them back to Bengaluru for further investigation.

During their stay in Kolkata, Shazib used a fake Aadhaar card under the name Yusha Shahnawaz Patel from Maharashtra’s Palghar, while Taha used fake names such as Vignesh B D from Karnataka and Anmol Kulkarni. At another hotel, they checked in under aliases Sanjay Agarwal and Uday Das, residents of Jharkhand and Tripura, respectively.

To avoid detection, the two frequently changed hotels and used only cash payments to avoid leaving a digital trail. Taha, an IT graduate, had used cryptocurrency to finance the operation, transferring it to Shareef to arrange logistics for the blast. Shareef, another accused arrested in connection with the case, had allegedly provided logistics like cell phones, fake SIM cards, and other materials used to plan and execute the blast, which left nine people injured.

The NIA has also recovered CCTV footage of the duo checking into hotels in Kolkata, where they spent time in areas such as Esplanade, Khidirpur, and Ekbalpur. Investigators are probing whether they had associates in West Bengal and why they chose the state to lay low.

The Supreme Court has strongly criticized the Uttarakhand licensing authority for failing to take action against Patanjali Ayurved regarding misleading advertisements. The court, comprising Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah, expressed their disapproval towards the officials for delaying action on complaints against Divya Pharmacy and being inactive since 2018. The bench also objected to the use of the term ‘bona fide’ for the officers and warned that they would not take it lightly.

Additionally, the apex court rejected the affidavits filed by yoga guru Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurved’s Managing Director, Balkrishna, who had submitted unconditional apologies for publishing misleading advertisements. The court questioned the sincerity of their apology and stated that it seemed like they had apologized only after being caught.

The bench, while dictating the order in the courtroom, expressed their reservations about accepting the affidavit filed by Ramdev and Balkrishna. The court stated that they were not willing to be generous in this case.

Dr Mithilesh Kumar, the Joint Director of the state’s Food and Drug Administration, pleaded for mercy, but the court was not in a mood to relent. When Dr. Kumar stated that he joined in June 2023 and that the issue had occurred before him, the court responded by saying, “Ab ghar pe time bitayiye” which means “now spend time at home.”

The court also expressed its astonishment at the lack of action from the state authority, which it described as being in a “deep slumber” for four to five years. Justice Hima Kohli accused the licensing authority of being hand in glove with Patanjali and doing nothing but pushing the file around.

Irani’s jibe at Rahul Gandhi comes even as the Congress was yet to decide its candidate from the Amethi seat in Uttar Pradesh, which used to be a stronghold for the grand old party. Rahul Gandhi held the Amethi seat before Smriti Irani dethroned him by a significant margin in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Priyanka Gandhi’s husband and businessman Robert Vadra hinted at entering politics and being the face of the Congress from the Amethi seat earlier this week. He said, “They want a member of the Gandhi family returns, they will ensure the person’s victory with a huge margin, they also expect that if I take my first step in politics, and think of becoming an MP, then I should represent Amethi.”
