India-Canada Tensions: Tensions between India and Canada seem to be rising again. The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has claimed that both China and India are trying to influence their country’s immigrant communities through illegal funding and propaganda. In a report, CSIS alleged that India has also interfered in Canada’s internal politics by providing financial support and other assistance to help its preferred candidates win seats in the Canadian Parliament.

The report further claims that India plays a significant role in interfering with Canada’s internal matters and weakening support for the Khalistan movement. According to The Global and Mail, the report accusing India of these actions is titled “Country Summaries” by CSIS.

Interference Starts with the Nomination Process
The report states that India helps its chosen candidates by interfering in the nomination process. This is where the involvement begins. Canadian media reports that this information was gathered from security and intelligence agencies and federal departments.

Canada’s PM Made Similar Accusations Last Year
Tensions between India and Canada started to worsen last year. On September 18, 2023, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India’s intelligence agency of being involved in the murder of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. He said, “Canadian security agencies are actively investigating credible allegations linking agents of the Government of India to the murder of Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar.” This statement escalated tensions between the two countries, and India denied these accusations.
