Muzaffarnagar Riots 2013: A local court in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, has acquitted 10 accused in the Ashu murder case, related to the 2013 communal riots, due to lack of evidence. The court stated that the prosecution failed to prove the charges against them.
The 10 accused who were acquitted include Gaurav, Amarpal, Rocky, Ratan, Dinesh, Yogesh, Abhishek, Ruby, Kapil Kumar, and Manoj Kumar. Additional District and Sessions Judge Anjani Kumar Singh, while acquitting the accused, said the prosecution could not present enough proof to support its case.
The order was passed on September 26 and made available two days later. The case was filed by Imrana, who claimed that on September 8, 2013, rioters had beaten her husband Ashu to death. At the time of the incident, Ashu was on his scooter, heading to the bus stand in Fugana village.

One of the accused had died during the trial. According to the prosecution, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) had filed charges against 11 people, but one accused, Sachin, died during the proceedings. Lawyer Shivraj Singh Malik explained that during the trial, both the complainant Imrana and Ashu’s mother, Vakila, turned hostile and did not support the prosecution’s claims.
The 2013 Muzaffarnagar and Shamli communal riots resulted in the deaths of more than 60 people and displaced over 40,000. The riots were triggered by an incident on August 27, 2013, leading to days of violence, fear, and displacement for thousands of people.
