The case about installing a statue of Rani Lakshmibai in Delhi’s Shahi Eidgah Park was heard in the High Court on Friday, 4th October. During the hearing, the lawyer for the Eidgah Management Committee informed the court that the statue has already been placed in the Shahi Eidgah Park.

In response, the Delhi High Court instructed the concerned agencies to send a three-member team to visit the location and show where the statue has been installed. The next hearing for this case is scheduled for 7th October 2024.

While hearing the dispute, the lawyer for the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) informed the court that, to ensure no one’s sentiments are hurt, a boundary wall has been constructed on three sides of the statue.

Statue is 200 meters away from Eidgah wall

Additionally, the lawyer for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) told the court that the statue is 200 meters away from the Eidgah wall and assured that no one’s sentiments will be hurt by the statue’s location. After listening to both sides, the court instructed that a three-member team should visit the site to see where the statue has been placed.

Currently, the installation work for the Rani Lakshmibai statue in Delhi’s Motia Khan area has been stopped due to protests, and police officers have been deployed in the area to maintain peace.

What is the Dispute?

In 2016-17, the Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) planned to shift the statue of Rani Lakshmibai from Deshbandhu Gupta Road. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had allocated land near Shahi Eidgah to place the statue. However, the Eidgah Management Committee has opposed this and filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, requesting that the statue not be installed in that location.
