India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav is reportedly set to be removed from the leadership role, with the decision likely to be communicated to the BCCI Apex Council before the squad for the upcoming UK tour is finalized.
According to sources, the national selection committee is no longer convinced that Suryakumar should continue leading the side following an extended period of poor form. The selectors had reportedly waited until the conclusion of IPL 2026 to assess whether the Mumbai Indians batter could regain his touch, but his performances failed to inspire confidence.
A senior BCCI source indicated that Suryakumar’s struggles have gone beyond a simple lack of runs, raising concerns about his overall form and place in the team’s future plans.
If the decision is finalized, Suryakumar could not only lose the captaincy but also find himself out of India’s T20 setup altogether after nearly 18 months of underwhelming performances.
Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma Emerge as Leading Candidates
With a leadership change appearing imminent, Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma have emerged as the frontrunners to take over as India’s next T20 captain.
Shreyas, who has earned praise for his leadership credentials and success as an IPL-winning captain, is viewed as the most experienced option. However, Tilak Varma is also being seriously considered by selectors, who see the young left-hander as a long-term leadership prospect.
The BCCI recently appointed Tilak as captain for the India A tour of Sri Lanka, a move understood to be part of the board’s assessment of his captaincy abilities.
Gambhir’s Preference Adds Twist to Selection Debate
The captaincy discussion is reportedly not straightforward. While Shreyas appears to be the natural successor, India head coach Gautam Gambhir is believed to have reservations regarding his appointment.
The relationship between Gambhir and Shreyas has been closely watched since their time together at Kolkata Knight Riders during the 2024 IPL season, when Gambhir served as mentor and Shreyas led the franchise. Public comments made by Shreyas about feeling underappreciated reportedly did not go unnoticed.
Meanwhile, Gambhir is understood to be a strong admirer of Sanju Samson’s leadership qualities and performances. However, selectors remain uncertain about the long-term consistency of both Samson and Ishan Kishan in the T20 format.
Decision Expected Soon
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia is expected to update the Apex Council regarding discussions between the selection committee and the coaching staff. The final decision on India’s T20 captaincy is likely to be made before the squad for the UK tour is announced.
With a leadership transition on the horizon, Indian cricket could soon witness the beginning of a new era in its shortest format setup.
