India’s wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul gifted his ‘Game Changer of the Match’ smartphone prize to a female stadium staff member after India’s victory over New Zealand in the second ODI in Wellington.
Indian cricketer KL Rahul grabbed attention not just for his performance on the field but also for a thoughtful gesture after India’s second ODI against New Zealand. Following the match in Wellington on November 7, Rahul decided to gift his smartphone award to a female staff member working at Hnry Stadium.
Rahul received the smartphone as part of his ‘Game Changer of the Match’ recognition. Instead of keeping the prize for himself, the Indian batter handed it over to the stadium employee, creating a memorable moment after an important victory for the visitors.
The gesture quickly became a talking point among cricket fans, highlighting Rahul’s appreciation for the people who work behind the scenes to make sporting events successful.
KL Rahul Plays a Crucial Role in India’s Win
Rahul’s contribution with the bat was equally important. India faced a difficult situation during their chase of New Zealand’s modest target of 135 runs, as the top order failed to provide a strong start.
India suffered an early setback when captain Shubman Gill was dismissed for a golden duck. Virat Kohli could manage only seven runs, while Rohit Sharma scored 23 before losing his wicket.
With wickets falling regularly, Rahul joined Shreyas Iyer to stabilise the innings. The pair added 46 runs for the fifth wicket, helping India remain in the contest.
Iyer contributed 30 runs, while Rahul stayed unbeaten on 26. India eventually reached 113/7 in 26 overs when rain interrupted the match.
Under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, India were four runs ahead of the required par score and secured a four-run victory.
India’s Bowlers Set Up the Victory
Earlier in the match, India’s bowling attack delivered an impressive performance by restricting New Zealand to just 134 runs.
Gurnoor Brar was among the standout performers, picking up four wickets and putting the home side under pressure. The Indian bowlers maintained control throughout the innings and gave their batters a manageable target.
However, India’s batting performance did not match the quality of its bowling effort. The early dismissals and middle-order struggles made the chase far more difficult than expected.
India Look to Seal the ODI Series in Hamilton
With the victory in Wellington, India moved to a 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand.
The two teams will meet again in the third and final ODI in Hamilton on November 10. India will aim to complete a series clean sweep, while also looking for a stronger performance from their top-order batters.
Although the rain-affected victory was not entirely convincing, KL Rahul’s composed batting and his generous gesture after the match provided two memorable moments for Indian cricket fans.
