Apple Watch Ultra 4 Review: A Strong Upgrade for Health and Fitness Tracking

Date:

Apple’s latest rugged smartwatch, the Apple Watch Ultra 4, keeps the familiar Ultra design but introduces meaningful upgrades beneath the surface. The biggest changes include a longer-lasting battery, a redesigned heart-rate sensing system and several new health and AI-focused features.

Priced at $799, the Apple Watch Ultra 4 is positioned as a premium smartwatch for athletes, outdoor enthusiasts and users who want detailed health tracking.

However, not every advertised feature is available at launch. Some of Apple’s new AI capabilities are scheduled to arrive later this year, making the Ultra 4 a product that will evolve over time.

Familiar Ultra Design With Few Visual Changes

At first glance, the Apple Watch Ultra 4 looks almost identical to its predecessor. Apple has retained the large 49mm titanium case and the rugged design that has become synonymous with the Ultra lineup.

The watch continues to be available in Natural Titanium and Black Titanium. There is no major redesign of the case, display or overall physical appearance.

That isn’t necessarily a problem. The Ultra’s design remains distinctive, with a large, bright display and a rugged construction aimed at outdoor and sports use.

For existing Ultra owners, however, the lack of external changes means the new model may not immediately feel like a completely new device.

Only One Major New Watch Face

Apple has introduced a new Siri Modular watch face with watchOS 27.

Its main feature is a dynamically changing center complication. Instead of permanently showing one piece of information, it can display the most relevant widget from the Smart Stack. Users can rotate the Digital Crown to move through additional widgets.

The larger Ultra display also gives the watch face an Ultra-specific appearance, including an additional bezel and an optional Ultra-style font.

The new face adds some variety, but users looking for a larger selection of new Ultra-specific watch faces may be disappointed.

Better Battery Life Is One of the Biggest Improvements

Battery life has traditionally been one of the most important areas for an Ultra smartwatch, particularly for people who spend long periods outdoors or participate in endurance sports.

Apple has increased the claimed battery life of the Ultra 4 to up to 50 hours during normal use. Low Power Mode can extend this to up to 84 hours, while outdoor workout tracking can last for up to 18 hours.

In everyday use, the improvement can make a noticeable difference. Instead of reaching for the charger every night, users can potentially go several days between charges.

The faster charging system can also bring the watch to around 80% in approximately 45 minutes, making it easier to top up before a workout or trip.

For runners, cyclists, hikers and endurance athletes, the extra battery capacity could be particularly useful.

New Heart-Rate Sensor System

One of the most important hardware upgrades is Apple’s new Health Sensing System.

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 features a second-generation electrical heart sensor alongside an always-on optical heart sensor. The system can collect heart-rate information more frequently, giving Apple more data for health and fitness measurements.

That additional data can contribute to metrics such as heart-rate variability (HRV) and other health indicators.

Apple has also highlighted research comparing its heart-rate technology with other wearable devices. However, real-world accuracy can vary depending on factors such as fit, movement and individual users, so longer-term testing will be important.

Readiness Brings More Health Insights

The improved sensors also support Apple’s new Readiness feature.

Rather than simply showing individual measurements, Readiness is designed to combine different health and activity data to provide an indication of how prepared someone may be for physical activity.

The feature needs around a week of collected data before it can provide a meaningful reading.

Other areas of Apple’s health software also benefit from the additional heart-rate information. Users can get more detailed information through apps such as Vitals and Heart Rate.

One particularly useful measurement is heart-rate recovery, which can show how quickly the heart rate falls after strenuous activity.

Step Tracking Gets an Update

Apple has also improved its step-tracking system with the Ultra 4.

The company describes the new system as its most accurate step tracking yet. In practical use, step counts can differ from those recorded by previous Apple Watch models, although determining whether every difference represents an accuracy improvement requires more extensive testing.

A new Steps complication is also available, allowing users to see their current step count directly on the watch face.

New AI Features Are Still Being Rolled Out

The S11 chip enables several new AI-related capabilities through Apple’s Audio Intelligence features.

These include:

  • Improved Music Recognition
  • Sound Recognition
  • Live Rewind
  • Siri Recap

Two of these features are already available.

Improved Music Recognition

Music Recognition has become faster and more capable. It can identify songs playing nearby, including tracks that may be less familiar or versions that have been remixed.

For people who frequently hear a song and want to identify it quickly, this is a useful everyday improvement.

Sound Recognition

Sound Recognition is designed to help users identify important environmental sounds, including sirens, doorbells and a baby’s cry.

The feature could be particularly useful for people who have difficulty hearing certain sounds around them.

Live Rewind and Siri Recap

The more ambitious AI features are Live Rewind and Siri Recap, but they are not available at launch and are expected later in the year.

Live Rewind is designed to provide an AI-generated recap of the previous 15 seconds, potentially helping users remember information they just heard.

Siri Recap is intended to provide a broader summary of the user’s day.

Apple says these features are designed with privacy in mind and don’t store the captured audio. Live Rewind also provides an audible indication and on-screen animation when activated.

Their eventual availability and performance will be important factors in evaluating how useful these AI capabilities really are.

A Redesigned Health App Is Also Coming

The Apple Watch’s health information is closely connected to the Health app on the iPhone.

Apple has redesigned the Health app in iOS 27, offering a more organized overview of areas such as sleep, fitness, heart health and vital signs.

At the time of the review provided here, the redesigned experience was still being rolled out, meaning a full assessment requires more time with the finished software.

Should You Buy the Apple Watch Ultra 4?

The answer largely depends on what you expect from your smartwatch.

For casual users who mainly want notifications, basic fitness tracking and Apple’s rugged Ultra design, the previous-generation Ultra models can still provide many of the same core experiences.

The Ultra 4 becomes more interesting for people who place greater importance on battery life, heart-rate tracking, endurance workouts and detailed health data.

Its hardware improvements aren’t revolutionary from the outside, but the upgraded sensing system and longer battery life address two areas that matter considerably for serious fitness users.

The bigger question is whether the upcoming software and AI features deliver enough additional value once they become available.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 Verdict

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is an evolution rather than a dramatic redesign. Its familiar titanium body and large display remain unchanged, but Apple has made important improvements underneath the surface.

The 50-hour battery rating, improved heart-rate sensing, expanded health tracking and S11 chip make it a more capable smartwatch, particularly for athletes and people who actively monitor their health.

The limited number of new watch faces and the delayed arrival of some AI features are notable drawbacks. As a result, owners of a recent Ultra model may have fewer reasons to upgrade immediately.

For new buyers who want Apple’s most rugged smartwatch and place a strong emphasis on fitness and health tracking, however, the Ultra 4 offers a substantial package that should become even more capable as its pro
