Tamil actor Dhanush met more than 3,000 women members of his fan club in Chennai and surprised them with traditional Kamakshi lamps as Deepavali gifts. The meeting has also fuelled speculation about his possible entry into Tamil Nadu politics.
Tamil cinema star Dhanush met over 3,000 women executives and volunteers of his fan organisation, Dhanush Narpani Iyakkam, in Chennai on Sunday, October 25. During the gathering, the actor gifted the attendees traditional Kamakshi Vilakku lamps ahead of the Deepavali festival.
The meeting attracted attention not only because of the large turnout but also because of growing discussions about Dhanush’s possible political ambitions. However, the actor has not officially announced any plans to enter politics.
Dhanush Gifts Kamakshi Vilakku Lamps to Women Fans
The gathering took place at a private engineering college in Semmenchery, on the outskirts of Chennai. Women representatives travelled from different districts of Tamil Nadu to attend the event despite heavy rainfall.
Dhanush arrived at the venue at around 3 pm, later than the expected arrival time of noon. He interacted with the women members and posed for photographs with them.
The highlight of the meeting was his Deepavali gift. Dhanush presented the attendees with Kamakshi Vilakku, a traditional South Indian oil lamp associated with Goddess Kamakshi, a form of Goddess Parvati. The lamp is commonly regarded as a symbol of prosperity, peace and auspicious beginnings.
Several attendees said they were surprised by the gesture and appreciated the actor’s festive gift.
The organisers also arranged meals for the guests, including traditional vegetarian dishes. A separate arrangement was reportedly made for those who preferred non-vegetarian food. Dhanush’s sisters were also present at the venue and interacted with some of the attendees.
Dhanush’s Political Entry Sparks Discussion
Dhanush’s meeting with thousands of fan club members comes at a time when speculation about his possible entry into politics is gaining attention in Tamil Nadu.
The discussions have intensified following the renaming of his fan organisation from Dhanush Fans Clubs to Dhanush Narpani Iyakkam, which translates to Dhanush Welfare Movement.
The organisation’s transition was formally approved at an executives’ meeting in Coimbatore on October 14. A redesigned logo was also introduced, featuring the actor’s image inside a red star surrounded by a red-and-white circular border.
The name and organisational changes have prompted some supporters to draw comparisons with other Tamil film stars who established political movements through their fan networks.
However, the renaming of the organisation does not, by itself, confirm that Dhanush intends to launch a political party.
Fans Hope Dhanush Will Enter Politics
Several women attending Sunday’s meeting expressed their desire to see Dhanush enter public life.
Supporters who travelled from different parts of Tamil Nadu said they were waiting for an official announcement and would support the actor if he decided to pursue a political career.
The development reflects the strong connection between Tamil cinema stars and their fan communities, which have historically played an important role in mobilising public support.
Dhanush has previously encouraged his fans to take part in social welfare activities rather than limiting their involvement to film-related events.
At a gathering in Tiruvallur district on July 27, he urged supporters to work for the welfare of people in their neighbourhoods and help families in need. He emphasised that fan unity could have a greater purpose when directed towards community service.
Political Leaders React to Dhanush’s Possible Entry
The possibility of Dhanush joining politics has also attracted comments from political figures.
On October 15, former AIADMK minister K. T. Rajendra Balaji said the party would welcome the actor if he wished to join it.
Meanwhile, DMK veteran and former minister S. Regupathy reportedly said that entering politics was a democratic right and that Dhanush could make the decision for himself. His remarks came amid reports about the actor’s alleged visit to Delhi to meet political leaders.
Despite these developments, there has been no official confirmation that Dhanush has met political leaders to discuss a political launch or that he intends to join any particular party.
Tamil Cinema Stars and Politics: A Long-Standing Connection
Tamil Nadu has a long history of actors moving from cinema into politics. Former chief ministers M. G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa built major political careers after establishing themselves in the film industry.
More recently, actor Vijay entered politics by launching the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on February 2, 2024, after years of fan-club and social activities.
Vijay’s political journey has further strengthened public interest in whether other leading Tamil actors might follow a similar path.
Dhanush’s expanding fan organisation and recent interaction with thousands of supporters have therefore attracted attention. For now, however, his political future remains uncertain.
What Happens Next?
Dhanush’s meeting with women fan club members has highlighted the scale of his support network and his engagement with fans ahead of Deepavali. His decision to distribute traditional lamps also gave the gathering a festive touch.
Whether the Dhanush Narpani Iyakkam will remain focused on welfare activities or eventually take on a broader political role remains to be seen. Until the actor makes an official announcement, speculation about his political debut should be treated with caution.
