Google Pixel 11 Pro Review: Android 17, Tensor G6, AI Features and More

Google’s Pixel 11 Pro arrives with a strong focus on software, artificial intelligence and long-term Android support. The flagship smartphone runs Android 17 out of the box and introduces several new features, including improved data transfer, enhanced Quick Share, app bubbles, Screen Reaction and Magic Capture.

The Pixel 11 Pro is also powered by Google’s latest Tensor G6 chipset, while storage starts at 256GB instead of the older 128GB option.

Here’s a closer look at the Pixel 11 Pro’s software experience, AI features and performance.

Android 17 on the Google Pixel 11 Pro

One of the biggest highlights of the Pixel 11 Pro is its clean Android experience. The smartphone comes with Android 17 pre-installed, while Google promises seven major Android OS upgrades and seven years of security updates.

Android 17 does not introduce a completely different visual design compared with Android 16, but Google has added several useful changes and improvements.

The new software also makes it easier to move data from an older smartphone to a Pixel device.

Easier Data Transfer for New Pixel Users

Google has improved the data-transfer experience in Android 17, particularly for people moving from another platform.

The updated system can transfer more than basic files such as photos and videos. Depending on compatibility, users can also move information such as eSIMs, messages, saved passwords and app data.

This could make switching to a Pixel smartphone considerably more convenient, especially for people moving from an iPhone.

Quick Share Gets Better Cross-Platform Support

Another notable Android 17 improvement is the updated Quick Share experience.

Quick Share can now work with Apple’s AirDrop feature on iOS and iPad, making it easier to exchange files between Android and Apple devices.

For users who regularly work across different platforms, this is one of the more practical software additions on the Pixel 11 Pro.

Android 17 Brings UI Improvements

Google has also made several changes to the Android interface.

The Wi-Fi and Mobile Data controls are now separated in the quick settings area. Google has also refined the frosted appearance of the notification and quick-toggle panel, along with the volume and power menus.

Another useful addition is the ability to resize quick-setting toggles horizontally. This gives users more flexibility when arranging frequently used controls.

However, Android 17 still has some limitations when it comes to deeper home-screen customization.

Pixel 11 Pro Home Screen and Customization

Google has not yet fully embraced extensive theme customization. Rich themes appear to be planned, but the available customization options remain relatively limited.

Users can apply a consistent colour tint across the interface and hide app labels for a cleaner home screen.

There are still some restrictions, however. The app launcher cannot be completely removed, multiple icons cannot be selected and moved together between home-screen pages, and the permanent search bar at the bottom cannot be removed.

These limitations may disappoint users who prefer a highly customizable Android launcher.

App Bubbles Improve Multitasking

Android 17 introduces another convenient multitasking option through App Bubbles.

Users can turn supported apps into floating bubbles by pressing and holding an app icon. Multiple bubbles can then be stacked in a corner of the display.

This provides a quick way to keep several apps accessible without constantly switching between full-screen applications.

Screen Reaction: Record Your Screen and Reaction

One of the more interesting Pixel 11 Pro features is Screen Reaction.

The feature can record what is happening on the smartphone screen while also using the front-facing camera to capture the user’s reaction.

It can be useful for recording reactions to videos, photos, reels, games or shopping content. Users can also choose whether to include device audio, surrounding audio and touch indicators.

Essentially, it expands traditional screen recording into a more interactive recording tool.

Magic Capture Uses AI to Pick Better Photos

Google has also added Magic Capture to the Pixel Camera experience.

When activated, the phone records a video and simultaneously captures multiple frames. It then selects what it considers the strongest images and automatically applies edits such as cropping, straightening and reducing blur.

The feature is designed to make it easier to get usable photos from moments where taking a perfectly timed still image is difficult.

Gemini Brings More AI Integration

Artificial intelligence remains an important part of the Pixel 11 Pro experience.

Google has increased the level of interaction between its apps through Gemini. Information from applications such as Messages, Calendar and Contacts can provide Gemini with more context about a user’s plans and activities.

This deeper integration allows Gemini to handle more complex tasks. For example, users can ask it to create a Calendar entry or help with tasks related to making plans.

Google has also introduced Gemini Intelligence features that can suggest actions based on what is happening on the device.

However, the automatic suggestions do not always appear consistently, which limits how useful the feature can be in everyday use.

HiLight Adds an RGB LED to the Pixel 11 Pro

The Pixel 11 series also introduces HiLight, an RGB LED surrounding the rear camera flash.

The light can activate during hands-free Gemini interactions and when receiving calls from selected favourite contacts.

It adds a distinctive visual element to the rear of the phone and gives the Pixel 11 Pro a feature that is uncommon among smartphones.

However, HiLight has a major limitation: it is not currently a conventional notification LED.

Because the light is located on the rear of the device, it is also less useful when the phone is placed face-up. At present, its functionality is limited mainly to Gemini interactions and calls from favourite contacts.

Google Pixel 11 Pro Performance and Tensor G6

The Pixel 11 Pro is powered by Google’s Tensor G6 chipset, manufactured using a 3nm process.

Google says the new chip delivers improved efficiency and up to a 50% increase in AI computing power compared with the previous generation.

The Tensor G6 uses a seven-core CPU configuration:

  • 1 × ARM C1-Ultra at 4.1GHz
  • 4 × ARM C1-Pro at 3.4GHz
  • 2 × ARM C1-Pro at 2.65GHz

All seven cores operate at higher clock speeds than the previous generation.

Pixel 11 Pro GPU

For graphics, Google has opted for an IMG CXTP-48-1536 GPU from Imagination.

The graphics architecture differs from the Series D GPU used by the Tensor G5. The Tensor G6 instead uses an older Series C architecture.

One notable drawback is that the GPU does not support ray tracing. Its compatibility with games may also be affected by comparatively limited developer support.

This means the Pixel 11 Pro’s strengths remain more focused on Google’s software and AI capabilities rather than pure gaming performance.

RAM and Storage Options

The Pixel 11 Pro comes with either 12GB or 16GB of RAM, depending on the storage configuration.

The 256GB version includes 12GB of RAM, while the 512GB and 1TB models offer 16GB of RAM.

All storage variants use UFS 4 technology.

Google has also dropped the 128GB base storage option. The Pixel 11 Pro now starts at 256GB, giving buyers twice the minimum storage compared with the previous base capacity.

The Google Pixel 11 Pro continues Google’s strategy of making software and AI central to the flagship smartphone experience.

Android 17 adds several practical improvements, while features such as Gemini integration, Screen Reaction and Magic Capture make the phone more capable in everyday situations. The improved data migration and cross-platform Quick Share support are also useful additions.

The Tensor G6 brings higher CPU clock speeds and Google’s claimed improvement in AI processing, although the GPU choice and lack of ray tracing support could make the phone less appealing to users primarily interested in gaming.

Overall, the Pixel 11 Pro stands out most for its Android 17 experience, long-term software support and AI-focused features, while there is still room for improvement in customization and graphics performance.
