India vs England 2026, 1st T20I: India captain Shreyas Iyer returned to form with a captain’s knock of 68 runs as he led from the front in the rain-hit opening T20I against England cricket team at Riverside Ground on Wednesday.

Although the match ended without a result due to persistent rain, Iyer’s composed innings helped India post a competitive total of 189/7 in 20 overs after winning the toss and choosing to bat first.

Shreyas Iyer Scripts Historic Record in England

The 30-year-old right-hander became the first Indian captain to score a T20I half-century on English soil, surpassing the previous best by Virat Kohli, who scored 47 as captain against England in Cardiff in 2018.

Previous highest T20I scores by Indian captains in England:

  • Shreyas Iyer – 68 (Chester-le-Street, 2026)
  • Virat Kohli – 47 (Cardiff, 2018)
  • Rohit Sharma – 31 (Birmingham, 2022)
  • MS Dhoni – 30* (Lord’s, 2009)

Overall, the highest score by a captain in a men’s T20I in England remains 90 by Steve Smith against England in Cardiff in 2015, followed by 85 from Babar Azam in Nottingham in 2021.

Iyer Completes 5,000 International Runs

During his 47-ball 68, Iyer also crossed the milestone of 5,000 international runs across all formats.

His international tally now stands at 5,031 runs from 147 innings, including:

  • ODI: 3,035 runs in 79 matches
  • T20I: 1,185 runs in 54 matches
  • Tests: 811 runs in 14 matches

The achievement places him among the quicker Indian batters to reach the landmark. Virat Kohli remains the fastest Indian to 5,000 international runs in 113 innings, followed by Sachin Tendulkar in 121 innings.

Abhishek Sharma Provides Explosive Start

Opening batter Abhishek Sharma gave India early momentum with a blistering 59 off just 24 deliveries, while Iyer anchored the innings after early wickets. Their efforts helped India finish with a challenging total of 189/7.

However, rain prevented England from beginning their chase, forcing the umpires to abandon the match.

Cheteshwar Pujara Praises Captain’s Knock

Former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara hailed Iyer’s innings, praising his composure and leadership under pressure.

According to Pujara, India had lost early wickets, making it crucial for the captain to stabilize the innings before accelerating later. He added that Iyer’s mature approach ensured India reached a commanding total and described it as an ideal captain’s innings.

India Eye First Win of the Series

The opening T20I ended in disappointment due to rain, meaning Iyer is still searching for his first victory as India’s T20I captain after the earlier series defeat against Ireland.

India and England will now meet in the second T20I at Old Trafford Cricket Ground on Saturday, where the visitors will look to take the lead in the five-match series.
