UAE Odd-Even Scheme: UAE to Implement Odd-Even Vehicle Plan Like Delhi

0

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will soon introduce an odd-even vehicle scheme to reduce the number of vehicles on the roads. This plan is similar to the one used in Delhi by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, which aimed to tackle traffic and reduce pollution.

Why the Scheme?
According to the Khaleej Times, the number of vehicles in the UAE has been increasing, causing traffic jams. People in the UAE own the most cars per person in the world. In Dubai alone, there are 400,000 registered vehicles with Salik tags, an 8.8% increase from the first six months of last year. The total number of cars is now 2.5 million, up from 2.2 million in the second quarter of 2023.

Vehicle Growth
Reports show that in the UAE, there is about one car for every two people. This is much higher than cities like New York, London, Singapore, and Hong Kong. For example, in 2006, there were 740,000 registered vehicles in Dubai, which doubled to 1.4 million by 2015 and reached 1.8 million by 2020. Each week, around 3 million cars are driven in Dubai, including those from neighboring emirates.

How the Plan Will Work
Dr. Monica Menendez, Associate Dean of Graduate Affairs at NYU Abu Dhabi, explains that the odd-even plan, also known as road space rationing, will limit some cars from being on the road. Vehicles with license plates ending in 1 and 2 will be banned on Mondays, 3 and 4 on Tuesdays, 5 and 6 on Wednesdays, 7 and 8 on Thursdays, and 9 and 0 on Fridays. All vehicles will be allowed on the roads on Saturdays and Sundays. This plan has been used in cities like Mexico City, Athens, and Beijing.

CTI’s Demand for Tax Data by Caste: Letter to PM Modi

0

The demand for caste-based census has been a topic of discussion in India for a while. Now, the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) from Delhi has made a new demand. They want that if a caste-based census is conducted, it should also include data on how much tax people from each caste pay. CTI has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with this request. They will also send letters to the Chief Ministers of all states.

What CTI Wrote to the PM

In the letter to the Prime Minister, CTI said that people should know the role of different castes in the economy. They want to know who pays the most tax and if the government makes policies considering their interests. The letter mentioned that the government has data on income tax and GST, but it is not clear how much revenue each caste contributes.

Demand for Insurance, Pension, and Medical Benefits

CTI also suggested that the caste contributing the most revenue should have policies and benefits like insurance, pensions, and medical facilities. CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal said that, as a trade organization, they are making this demand because there is a lot of discussion about it in the trader community. Thousands of traders support this demand.

Congress Criticizes Kangana

Recently, Kangana Ranaut expressed her opposition to caste-based census in an interview. Congress spokesperson Supriya Srinet criticized Kangana’s stance, saying, “Today again, BJP MP Kangana said that caste-based census should not happen. Why should we know the caste? Madam, you are a privileged star and MP. How would you know the situation of Dalits, backward classes, tribals, or poor general castes?”

What Did Kangana Say?

Kangana Ranaut stated her position on caste-based census, aligning with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s views. She said, “We will stay together and be good. If we divide, we will face problems. There should be no caste-based census. We don’t ask Bollywood stars about their caste. People around me don’t care about caste. There is increasing violence against women in the country, and we need to focus on that.”

Prostate Cancer and Alzheimer’s Risk: Study Finds Link

0

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is used to treat prostate cancer by lowering testosterone, which the cancer needs to grow. However, research from Augusta University in Georgia has found that removing androgen, a key regulator of amyloid metabolism, can lead to increased amyloid plaques, which are associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

What Did the Study Find?

Researchers studied the relationship between Alzheimer’s and cancer using animal models. They gave ADT to some animals for eight weeks, monitoring androgen levels, tumor size, and changes in blood markers.

They also created different groups of animals: one group without Alzheimer’s or cancer, one with Alzheimer’s only, and one with cancer only, which received ADT. While they didn’t find major differences in plaque levels at the end of eight weeks, they did find increased activity in glial cells, which are part of the central nervous system, in the cancer-only and ADT-treated groups.

Key Findings

  • The study found increased inflammation in the brain and higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (small proteins that trigger inflammation) in animals with Alzheimer’s and cancer treated with ADT.
  • The blood-brain barrier, which protects the brain, was damaged in these animals. ADT made this barrier more permeable, leading to higher inflammation.
  • Combining ADT with another drug, Natalizumab (used for multiple sclerosis and Crohn’s disease), helped reduce inflammation, improve the blood-brain barrier, and enhance cognitive functions in the animals.

Implications

The research suggests that ADT might increase the risk of Alzheimer’s by promoting inflammation and damaging the blood-brain barrier. The study calls for clinical trials in prostate cancer patients undergoing ADT to further explore this connection.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Statue: Sculptor Jaydeep Apte on the Run, Police Searching

0

Sculptor Jaydeep Apte, who was responsible for making the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is currently on the run. He has been missing from his home in Kalyan since the statue collapse incident. Another accused, Chetan Patil, is also missing. The police have filed an FIR against both.

Chetan Patil is a structural consultant from Kolhapur. When the Sindhudurg crime branch team visited their homes, they could not find either Chetan Patil in Kolhapur or Jaydeep Apte in Kalyan. The Sindhudurg police have formed seven teams to find the accused. Two teams are handling technical analysis, while five teams are searching in Mumbai, Kalyan, Thane, Kolhapur, and Goa.

The police are conducting raids but have not yet found any clues about the accused.

Who is Jaydeep Apte?

Jaydeep Apte is a 25-year-old resident of Kalyan, near Mumbai. He is reportedly close to Shrikant Shinde, the son of Mumbai’s MP and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Jaydeep is an alumnus of Mumbai’s JJ School of Arts. It is alleged that his connection with Shrikant Shinde helped him get the contract for the statue, despite having no significant experience in making large statues before.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has assured that the Navy will help in creating a grand statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji. However, the opposition, led by the Maha Vikas Aghadi, continues to criticize the government over the issue and has even organized a march in protest.

Gujarat Floods: Water Levels Rise, Crocodiles Enter Homes

0

In Gujarat, heavy rains have caused severe flooding, forcing people to leave their homes. The floods have become so extreme that crocodiles are now invading residential areas. Videos on social media show crocodiles either entering homes or resting on rooftops, posing a threat to residents. The heavy rainfall has also increased the sea levels, leading to warnings for fishermen to stay away from the water. The weather department predicts that Gujarat will continue to experience heavy rain for the next two days.

Flood-Related Deaths and Displacement

In the latest flood-related incidents, 19 more people have died, raising the total number of deaths in the past three days to 26. Some areas have seen heavy rainfall for four consecutive days. In flood-affected areas, 17,800 people have been evacuated to safety.
