‘Nobody Wants to See Another Rama,’ Says Arun Govil on Ranbir Kapoor’s Casting
Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming epic film Ramayana is one of the most anticipated Bollywood releases in recent years. Starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, the film has generated massive buzz ever since its first look was unveiled. While many fans praised the scale and visual ambition of the project, the casting of Ranbir Kapoor as Maryada Purushottam Ram has sparked mixed reactions on social media.
Now, veteran actor Arun Govil, who became synonymous with Lord Rama through Ramanand Sagar’s iconic television series Ramayan, has shared his views on the ongoing debate. Interestingly, Govil is also a part of Nitesh Tiwari’s adaptation, where he plays King Dasharatha, the father of Lord Rama.
Arun Govil Praises Ranbir Kapoor
In an interview with Variety India, Arun Govil spoke positively about Ranbir Kapoor and expressed confidence in his abilities as an actor.
“As Rama, I won’t be able to tell you anything about him, but he is a good actor, there is no doubt about that. He is also a fine human being. Every actor approaches a character in their own way, and he must have portrayed Lord Rama in his unique style,” Govil said.
His remarks suggest that while comparisons are inevitable, every actor deserves the opportunity to interpret a legendary character through their own creative lens.
Why Is Ranbir Kapoor Facing Backlash?
Addressing the criticism surrounding Ranbir’s casting, Govil acknowledged that audiences continue to associate him with the role of Lord Rama decades after the original television series aired.
“Perhaps that is because my performance as Lord Rama became a benchmark. It still lives in the hearts and minds of people,” he said.
Govil further explained that many viewers find it difficult to accept another actor in the role because of the deep emotional connection they have with his portrayal.
“Nobody wants to see another Rama. My Ramayan is still being telecast somewhere or the other at any given time,” he added.
Arun Govil Reveals His Lasting Impact as Lord Rama
The veteran actor also highlighted the lasting cultural impact of his portrayal. According to Govil, images of Lord Rama sold at fairs and religious gatherings in parts of North and Central India often still feature his face.
“Even today, whenever pictures of Lord Rama are sold at fairs and local events, many of them carry my face. That’s why it doesn’t feel right for me to comment on another actor’s performance as Lord Rama,” he said.
His comments reflect the unique bond he shares with audiences who continue to view him as the embodiment of the revered character.
Ramayana Release Date
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra, Ramayana is planned as a two-part cinematic epic. The first installment is scheduled to release during Diwali 2026, while the second part is expected to arrive in theatres on Diwali 2027.
With a star-studded cast, massive production scale, and high expectations from audiences, Ramayana is shaping up to be one of the biggest Indian film projects ever undertaken.
