The Russia-Ukraine war may soon see a ceasefire, as former U.S. President Donald Trump is actively working to stop the conflict. Reports suggest that Trump may soon speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone.
U.S. in Talks with Ukraine and Russia
Steve Witkoff, a special envoy from the White House, said on Sunday that the U.S. is also in continuous talks with Ukraine. Earlier, the U.S. proposed a 30-day ceasefire to both nations. Ukraine has accepted the proposal, but Russia has not yet agreed.
What Did Steve Witkoff Say?
Speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union”, Witkoff stated:
“I hope the two presidents will have a phone call this week. We are also in constant talks with Ukraine.”
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Friday that Putin had sent a message to Trump through Witkoff before the possible phone call. Last week, Witkoff also met with Putin in Moscow.
Putin Ready to Meet Trump
Witkoff described his talks with Putin as positive, saying it was a solution-focused discussion.
According to Witkoff, Putin is willing to meet Trump, and both leaders want to end the war. He also mentioned that Trump is hopeful that an agreement could be reached soon.
Russia’s Conditions for Ceasefire
Ukraine wants assurances that if Russia attacks again, the U.S. and its allies will protect it. However, the White House is hesitant to make a firm commitment.
On the other hand, Russia has made it clear that it does not want a temporary ceasefire under any circumstances.
