On August 16, just a day after India’s Independence Day, ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) will conduct an important launch. A small rocket, also known as a “baby rocket,” will carry the EOS-8 Earth imaging satellite into space. Along with it, a demo satellite named SR-0, or “Space Rickshaw,” will also be launched. This Space Rickshaw was developed by a startup in Chennai. The launch will take place from the Sriharikota launch center.

Why This Launch is Special

This launch is significant because India is relying on a small rocket for the mission. The baby rocket is officially named the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV). According to NDTV, Dr. M. Shankaran, Director of the UR Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), stated that the EOS-8 satellite incorporates future technologies. The satellite weighs 175 kilograms.

Previous SSLV Mission

The first flight of the SSLV in 2022 was unsuccessful. However, the second flight on February 10, 2023, was successful. ISRO believes that after the third flight, the technology of the SSLV can be transferred to the industry.

Space Rickshaw Details

The Space Rickshaw satellite that this rocket will carry weighs just half a kilogram.

Features of SSLV Rocket

The market for satellite launches is growing rapidly. To meet this demand, ISRO developed the SSLV. The rocket stands 34 meters tall and weighs 120 tons. It can carry satellites weighing up to 500 kilograms into Low Earth Orbit, which is about 350-400 kilometers above the Earth. In comparison, India’s heaviest rocket, GSLV Mk 3, weighs 640 tons. The SSLV took over seven years to build and cost about 170 crore rupees.

Broken Roads, Potholes, and Heavy Traffic Plague Residents of Shela Area; Authorities Remain Unresponsive

0

Residents of the Shela area in Ahmedabad have been suffering from broken roads for the past two months. The roads are filled with potholes, and a massive sinkhole has made one side of the road impassable. Heavy traffic has caused significant problems for locals. Despite numerous complaints and even a warning from the High Court, the issues remain unresolved.

Since the start of the monsoon, a large sinkhole has developed in Shela. This has blocked the main road from both directions, leading to severe traffic congestion. The road has also become riddled with potholes. In the midst of development claims, the situation in Shela seems to be stuck in a state of disrepair.

To understand how “smart” Ahmedabad really is, one needs to visit Shela. Driving in this supposedly developed area feels like a headache, as evidenced by the poor state of the roads. A decent road is hard to find here. The worst situation is faced by residents of Orchid Sky and nearby areas.

On June 30, Ahmedabad experienced heavy rainfall, which further damaged the roads in Shela. The large sinkhole created during this rain has yet to be fully repaired. Although temporary repairs were started, they are still ongoing after nearly 45 days, with no clear end in sight.

The main road connecting Shela to SP Ring Road has been closed due to the sinkhole for the past two months. The alternate route is so congested that people are crying out for help. At night, residents can get stuck in traffic for hours. The biggest problem is reaching home on time. The situation is dire for the 650 flat owners in Orchid Sky, as school buses are unable to reach their flats. Locals accuse the authorities of not taking any action.

Not only the residents but also about 150 shopkeepers are facing difficulties. Due to the poor road conditions, customers are not visiting their shops, worsening their situation. Despite the ongoing pain and complaints, it remains uncertain whether the authorities will ever respond to these concerns.
