Mosquitoes Will Be Eliminated: Special ‘Mosquito Terminator’ Train in Delhi

0

During the monsoon season, water collects everywhere, leading to diseases like malaria, chikungunya, dengue, and Japanese encephalitis. Mosquitoes breed in the stagnant water around railway tracks, spreading these diseases. To combat this, the Indian Railways has launched a special train in the New Delhi area called the ‘Mosquito Terminator on Wheels.’

On Friday, the railway flagged off this special train. The train will cover approximately 75 kilometers on each trip, spraying anti-larvae solution along the tracks. This will prevent mosquitoes from breeding in the water around the railway tracks, helping protect millions of people living nearby from various diseases.

The train is equipped with truck-mounted power sprayers sent by the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC). It sprays anti-larvae solution over areas up to 50 to 60 meters away from the tracks.

The anti-larvae spraying will continue in Delhi until August 21. On Friday, the train traveled from Adarsh Nagar to Badli and Rathdhana before reaching New Delhi. The aim is to reduce mosquito larvae and the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. Additionally, the DMC is taking further steps to control mosquitoes, including home inspections and public awareness efforts.

Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic medal hopes were crushed when her appeal to the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) was dismissed. The Indian wrestler, who felt robbed of a medal in Paris, will soon return home.

The controversy surrounding her disqualification from the 50kg freestyle final continues to make headlines. According to a report in The Indian Express, Vinesh’s coach, Woller Akos, revealed the extreme measures she took to try and make weight before the competition. Akos shared a Facebook post, which he later deleted, detailing the events of the night before the weigh-in.

Akos wrote that Vinesh had 2.7 kg of excess weight to lose after her semi-final match. Despite exercising for an hour and 20 minutes, she still had 1.5 kg to go. The coach described how Vinesh then spent 50 minutes in a sauna, but didn’t sweat at all. With no other option, she worked on cardio machines and wrestling moves from midnight to 5:30 am, taking short breaks in between.

Akos recalled that Vinesh “collapsed” at one point, but they managed to get her back up and into the sauna for another hour. The coach admitted that he feared for Vinesh’s life, thinking she might die from exhaustion.

In a conversation with Vinesh after she was discharged from the hospital in Paris, Akos shared her inspiring words. Vinesh told her coach, “Don’t be sad because I achieved my goal. I proved that I am one of the best in the world. We have proved that the gameplans work. Medals, podiums are just objects. Performance cannot be taken away.”

Political Turmoil in Thailand: Court Removes Prime Minister

0

After Bangladesh, Thailand is now experiencing political upheaval. On Wednesday, Thailand’s Constitutional Court removed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from office. The court made this decision in a case related to ethics.

The judges voted 5-4 that Srettha Thavisin violated rules by appointing a lawyer with a criminal record to his cabinet. This case was brought by a group of former senators appointed by Thailand’s former ruling junta.

Just a week before this, the court had dissolved the main opposition party, causing a stir in Thai politics. The Constitutional Court found Srettha guilty of appointing a cabinet member who had been sentenced to jail for bribing a judge. The court’s decision was made by a 5:4 majority.

Acting Cabinet Until New PM Appointed

The cabinet will remain in a caretaker role until the parliament appoints a new prime minister. There is no set deadline for this appointment. In April, Srettha had appointed Pichit Chuenban as Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office. Pichit had been jailed for six months in 2008 for contempt of court, after allegedly trying to bribe a judge in a case involving former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Following the controversy, Pichit resigned a few weeks after his appointment. Although Pichit had served his jail time, the court ruled that his behavior was still unethical. The court stated that Srettha had a duty to ensure the integrity of his cabinet members. Even though Srettha knew about Pichit’s past, he appointed him to the cabinet, violating the ethics code.

COVID-19 Cases in India: 908 New Cases Between June and July

0

According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), between June and July of this year, India reported 908 new COVID-19 cases and 2 deaths. The latest update from WHO reveals that from June 24 to July 21, 85 countries tested an average of 17,358 samples for SARS-CoV-2 each week. During this period, new cases increased by 30%, while deaths increased by 26%.

Global Situation

Worldwide, more than 186,000 new cases were reported across 96 countries, and over 2,800 new deaths were reported in 35 countries. As of July 21, WHO stated that since the start of the pandemic, there have been over 775 million confirmed cases and more than 7 million deaths globally.

Highest Cases in Thailand

Thailand reported the highest number of new COVID-19 cases in the Southeast Asia region, with 6,704 new cases and 35 new deaths. India followed with 908 new cases and 2 new deaths, while Bangladesh had 372 new cases and 1 new death.

The report also mentioned that globally, the JN.1 variant is the most reported variant of interest (VOI), present in 135 countries. The variants KP.3.1.1 and LB.1, both descendants of JN.1, are also increasing in global prevalence.

Current Situation in India

According to the Central Health Ministry’s COVID dashboard, several Indian states are seeing an increase in cases. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, and West Bengal all have a positivity rate of over 5%.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) have identified the highly infectious KP.1 and KP.2 strains, which evolved from the JN.1 Omicron variant, as responsible for the COVID cases in India.

However, Health Minister J.P. Nadda informed Parliament earlier this month that there has not been an increase in hospital admissions or disease severity. As of August 5, 824 cases of the COVID KP mutant strain were reported, with Maharashtra having the highest number at 417 cases, followed by West Bengal with 157 cases and Uttarakhand with 64 cases.

Bangladesh Tension: Yunus Visits Temple, Promises Peace, Will Violence Against Hindus Stop?

0

In Bangladesh, attacks on Hindus have been ongoing, and the interim government under Mohammad Yunus has taken steps to address this issue. The government has set up a hotline for Hindus to report any attacks.

Yunus’s Temple Visit

Recently, Mohammad Yunus, the head of the interim government, visited a Hindu temple to show support for the Hindu community. He assured them that the government is with them and that everyone’s rights should be respected, regardless of their religion. Yunus stated that in Bangladesh, people should be seen as humans, not just as Muslims, Hindus, or Buddhists. He emphasized the need to fix institutional failures to prevent such issues.

Strengthening Relations with India

Yunus’s visit to the temple and his assurances to the Hindu community may also be seen as part of an effort to strengthen ties with India. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier expressed concern over the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. Yunus’s actions might be an attempt to improve relations with India.

Government Actions and Hotline

The interim government has also created a hotline to report attacks on temples and other religious sites. This measure aims to ensure that the government and administration can quickly address any incidents.

Concerns About the Government’s Intentions

Some believe that Yunus’s visit to the temple might be symbolic rather than a genuine effort to address the issue. Recently, the government appointed A.F.M. Khalid Hussain as the minister of religious affairs. Khalid Hussain has a history of mistreating Hindus in Bangladesh, raising concerns about the government’s commitment to protecting minorities.

Overall, while Yunus’s visit and the hotline are positive steps, there is skepticism about whether these actions will effectively curb violence against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh.
